My Philosophy on Leadership
Leadership doesn't just come from a title, rank, or appointed position. Leadership is a mindset rooted in ownership, responsibility, and purpose. Leadership means fostering ideas and cultivating environments where people are encouraged and empowered to bring their voices, visions, and solutions to create a lasting impact. When grounded in collaboration, that impact can evolve with our changing environment while remaining sustainable and achievable for the communities we serve.
My Background and Experience
As the commanding peace officer and supervisor of the District Attorney's Office Investigation Unit, I lead and coordinate complex, multi-jurisdictional investigations, which include homicides, sexual violence, officer-involved shootings, use of force, and economic crimes, while ensuring compliance with state and federal law. I oversee personnel, budgeting, and resource management, implementing best practices and policies that promote accountability, transparency, and interagency collaboration. I develop training programs, evaluate staff performance, and foster a culture of professionalism and psychologically safe environments. My leadership ensures operational efficiency, case continuity, and investigative excellence. This experience has given me a comprehensive understanding of how cases progress through the criminal justice system - from initial law enforcement contact to prosecution and resolution - providing deep insight into every aspect of public safety and justice.
Patrol officer with the Aspen and Basalt Police Department and a deputy with the Eagle County Sheriff's Office, working within various departmental philosophies.
Military
Served in the military as an Infantryman with the 1st Infantry Division (The Big Red One) during tactical and peacekeeping operations in the Balkan region.
As a guest presenter at local high schools, I discuss the U.S. and Colorado Constitutions, helping students understand and apply their constitutional protections in everyday life. Additionally, I serve as a Mountain Safety (Yellow Jacket) on our local ski slopes, helping to ensure the safety of our local ski areas.
Collaboration
Instructor at the Police Academy, as well as partnering with community organizations and wraparound services to strengthen case responses to improve outcomes.
MY FIVE PILLARS
Safety:
We will prioritize Eagle County's safety through continued effective law enforcement practices, ensure unified leadership, while promoting collaboration to address community needs through community collaboration and steering committees. Our approach will focus on improving overall response through data-driven decision-making and expanding community-based problem-solving.
Build staffing and internal culture:
Stabilize and strengthen internal staffing by implementing a modern command structure that shares a unified focus on recruitment, retention, and training that aligns with clear values and expectations, while prioritizing officer wellness, leadership development, growth opportunities through lateral and vertical opportunities, and embracing lateral thinking and command support that empower line-level supervisors to support deputies and staff in their roles fully.
Community trust and transparency:
I believe in a community where every person’s voice matters and people feel genuinely heard, respected, and represented in the decisions that shape their lives. When law enforcement is deeply engaged with the community, applies the law fairly to everyone, and communicates clearly and honestly (so the community understands the "why"), it builds real, lasting trust. That means sharing regular public updates, being upfront and responsive on critical issues, and inviting meaningful input, so the community is not just informed, but actively involved.
Constitutional, equitable policing:
Every part of our operations will be firmly rooted in protecting people’s rights, applying the law fairly, and using what actually works to improve safety through policies and training grounded in constitutional protections and proven, evidence‑based strategies that reduce crime and enhance public trust.
Technology integration:
Thoughtful integration of technology will involve using modern tools to enhance safety, transparency, and efficiency while always preserving human judgment, discretion, and community relationships. This includes implementing technology that improves emergency response, strengthens communication with the public, and supports deputies in the field and in the office, all while carefully safeguarding privacy and civil liberties. By selecting data systems, digital platforms, and equipment that align with community values and constitutional standards, we can make smarter decisions, reduce inefficiencies, and ensure that technology serves people—not the other way around.
